The M.V. "BELLUBERA" was built in Sydney by Morts Dock & Engineering Co. Ltd. in 1910 and was the first of this Company's vessels to be converted from steam to Diesel-Electric propulsion in 1936.
Following her conversion, the vessel was destroyed by fire at the Kurraba Point Workshops. She was rebuilt and back in service in September, 1937.
In 1954, "BELLUBERA" steamed to Newcastle to have her original Diesel-Electric propulsion machinery replaced with more modern units. She resumed service in October, 1954.
Technical Details are as follows: Steel construction, length 210ft., beam 32ft. 2in., draught 12ft., two passenger decks. 505 tons gross. Propulsion is by 3 supercharged, English Electric, Diesel Generators, each 500 B.H.P., supplying power to two Electric Motors which drive the main shaft and propeller through a five to one reduction gear box at each end of the vessel. Speed of vessel 16 knots.
"BELLUBERA" is certified to carry 1,318 passengers. The hull is of double ended construction with a propeller and rudder fitted at both ends. This enables the vessel to attain full speed in either direction and it is not necessary to turn the vessel around at Terminal wharves. The master has direct control of all engine movements from the bridge of the vessel.
Normal crew consists of Captain, Chief Engineer, Greaser, 3 Deckhands and a Deckboy.
All Manly Ferries are equipped with V.H.F. Radio-Telephone which enables them to be in direct communication with the Sydney Terminal.
