PUBLIC TRANSPORT AUTHORITY OF NSW.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

IN RESPECT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN
INTEGRATED TICKETING SYSTEM FOR
PUBLIC PASSENGER SERVICES IN THE
SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA

OCTOBER 1997

KEY ISSUES AFFECTING THE MIGRATION PATH FOR INTEGRATED TICKETING:

At present private bus operators use a variety of consoles (driver terminals) to sell tickets (refer to Schedule 1). Some of these consoles may not have the capacity nor capability to readily connect or integrate to an electronic ticket reader.

As with the hardware, a variety of software solutions have been implemented over time which may create difficulties in collecting and compiling integrated ticketing data.

The installation of electronic ticketing equipment requires investment and funding decisions for the operators. A cost effective solution is now sought which minimises the capital outlay, protects current investments and looks at innovative funding options for expanding integrated ticketing to private operators.

It is recognised that there are new and emerging technologies in the ticketing area and it is essential that solutions offered provide for:

  • an orderly transition path;

  • building on the existing investment;

  • ensuring that the new technology will co-exist with the current technology, including magnetic tickets and cash.

  • an open system capable of processing all types of smart cards.

  • flexibility to accommodate future technology.

    As integrated ticketing across all modes of transport gains momentum over the next few years, it is anticipated that the complexities in data capture and revenue distribution will increase to a point where a suitable central process may be required to efficiently distribute revenue between transport providers, where such providers decide to use a shared ticket product - eg. SRA/STA TravelPass.
